Degenerative Spine Disease
Degenerative spine disease is legion. Pain alone is hardly an
indication for surgery, but when combined with weakness this
may
  • predispose to physical falls
  • cause loss of bowel / bladder control
  • severely disable mobility

In patients suitable for treatment, we offer surgical
intervention to provide quality of life & prevent potential
complications.
Deformity
Disc Replacement
We treat deformities of the spine, especially that found in
juveniles and adolescents. Formerly regarded by many as a
form of 'cosmetic surgery', scoliosis surgery prevents the
respiratory and cardiac effects of severe curves besides
averting neuropathic and physical morbidity.
We recognise that in a subset of patients with disc diseases,
refractory backpain may be treated well with artificial disc
replacement. These patients are carefully selected for their
suitability in receiving such implants either in the low back or
in the neck. Such devices are designed to provide
comfortable range of motion besides taking the pain away.
Spine Infections
Tuberculosis of the spine and other infections often are
aggressive enough to destabilise the spine besides causing
septic vascular infarcts. Where required, we intervene
surgically to clear the infective focus, relieve the nerve
compression and provide immediate stability.
Spine Trauma
Disc Prolapse
It is our practice to surgically treat disc prolapses only when
there are absolute neurological reasons for doing so, as
illustrated by this sequestration. Where possible, we utilise
minimal incisions aided by our DePuy PIPELINE system.
Where required, fusion may be advised.
Vertebroplasty
Complex Cervical Diseases
Diseases like Ossified Posterior Longitudinal Ligament
(OPLL) are common in the region and are frequently morbid.
We employ laminoplasty methods toward such lesions to
prevent severe myelopathy.
In selected patients with osteoporotic vertebral wedge
fractures, we offer vertebroplasty -- injecting cold-curing
polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) into the fractured bone. We
aim to reduce or eliminate the original pain.
Some fractures / dislocations of the spine are unstable and
would require surgery. Breaches into the neural canal have
to be cleared and instability be secured with implants.

Services
Spine Tumours
When the spine is affected by a cancer that carries a
reasonable life expectancy and prognosis, spine surgery
alleviates pain and aims to restore neural function.
